Construction of a Complex for Orphaned Children after Earthquake in Bam

The earthquake in January 2003 in the city of Bam inflicted great losses to the inhabitants of that region, and there remained a high number of orphaned children after the disaster.

Considering the general policies and humanitarian objectives of SAIPA Company in order to help the people of Bam, various measures initiated, including donations to charities and construction of complex for orphans coordinated by Sepehr Bam Company.

The project of constructing the complex started with an investment of about 3 billion Iranian Rials in property and infrastructure in the region in an area about 900 square meters. Two separate two-storey buildings were constructed which are located in the North and the South of the property.

Between two buildings, there is an open courtyard. These two buildings are connected with a corridor width of 2 meters and a length of 13.5 meters. On the north of the north building there is yard with width of 2 meters and length of 22 meters.

The project was completed in 2006 and delivered to Sepehr Bam Company.

1 - Green Selection

Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a method in which the impacts of a project or operation on the environment are analyzed; by using this method during the implementation of a project, with regard to the current situation, the operations are performed in such a way that they have the least impact on the environment. In Iran, for assessing the environmental impacts of projects and industrial development, there is a legal requirement. Environmental Impact Assessment not only prevents the negative impacts on environment but also reduces costs. It helps to define initiatives or actions for improvement during the operation.

In this method, experts study the processes of construction and operation of the project to understand the impacts of operational factors on environmental factors in various stages and find approaches or initiatives to reduce those impacts.

other advantages of the Environmental Impact Assessment are as follows :

  • Supporting sustainable development
  • Increase the credibility of the government at international level.
  • Better implementation of rules and regulations

2 - Green Production

All process of production of goods and services must have least consequences to the environment. Such processes should have the following conditions:

  • Compliance with environmental laws and requirements and help them to implement
  • Continuous monitoring, protection against contamination and remove pollutants from the wastewater system by using online systems, measurements of stack and boilers in production lines, Compliance with international clean air Standards such as ISO or 14000 Standards
  • Reduce carbon emissions, less pollution and waste (collective carbon footprint)
  • Increasing energy efficiency and the use of basic resources or reduce resource consumption by using international standards such as ISO 50001
  • Access to environmentally compatible technologies (development of applied science and green research)

3 - Green Supply Chain

Green Supply Chain Management is the integration of supply chain management with environmental requirements in all stages of product design, selection and supply of raw materials, production, manufacturing, transportation, distribution processes, delivery to customers and finally recycling management to maximize the efficiency of energy consumption and improved performance of the entire supply chain. Green Supply Chain management is often assumed to be reducing or not using harmful chemicals, but it is a misconception of the whole idea because Supply Chain Management to be green requires more than one or two stages and all parts of an organization are included. As a matter of fact Green Supply Chain links economic targets with environmental objectives of the organization.

4 - Green Car

A Green Car is a product that has minimal impacts to the environment in its life cycle. The following items are considered as part of the definition of green vehicles:

  • Eco- labeling (ISO 14022 standards): Eco-labeling is a type of environmental labeling (according to performance) and provides information to consumers about the quality of the product. Eco-label indicates the discernable differences of a product (good or service) based on environmental considerations and show the characteristics of the product in its lifetime.
  • Product life cycle (ISO 14040 standards): Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is a tool for decision making to identify and evaluate the costs and environmental impacts of a product, process or service throughout its life cycle. These evaluations focus on factors such as material flow, energy consumption; waste produced during the use of raw materials and recycling process.
  • Vehicle emission standards: There are tests relating to environment to verify that the vehicles are in compliance with the standards for controlling pollution. Different countries have defined various tests to ensure the control over vehicles emissions. European Union has defined EU and ECE systems which has seven types of tests. These systems are used in Iran too. Euro IV and Euro V emission standards are instances of these two systems.

5 - Green After-Sale Service

Automotive after-sales service dealers and agencies must apply processes and operations that have the least impacts on environment. This includes the following commitments:

  • Total compliance with environmental laws and regulations, and assist in their implementation
  • Control and protection against environmental pollution (air, water and soil)
  • Increasing efficiency in energy consumption and the use of basic resources or reducing resources consumption
  • Full implementation of waste management

6 - Green Dismantling

Old cars produce an estimated 8 to 9 million tons of waste annually in European countries. In this regard, Europe Union approved and enacted EU ELVs (No. 2000/53 / EC) to be implemented in all EU countries. The law requires car manufacturers to take responsibility of the whole recycling process of scrapped cars according to terms of the law.

Economic Benefits of Green Dismantling:

By recycling and dismantling old cars which consume more fuel, there will be reduction in fuel and energy consumption and it results in reduction of spare parts importation; it also provides job opportunities and increases employment in recycling industry; The scrapped materials will supply steel producing Companies and eventually strengthens the growth of the automobile industry.

Social Benefits:

Green Dismantling reduces pollution and protects the environment, reduces health care costs, urban traffic congestion and accidents.

Benefits for Owners of Old Cars:

Green Dismantling has even benefits for old car owners, beside the facilities defined in scrappage schemes like state-provided loans, there will be reduction in fuel costs, maintenance warranty costs and also increasing safety and reduction of accidents.

7 - Waste Management

Waste Management means to provide required facilities for reduction of waste production through modifications in consumption patterns and waste sorting from the source through education.

Waste management strategy includes the following steps:
Avoiding waste production, waste reduction, reuse the waste, sort and recycling of waste and waste recovery.

There are three important factors which jointly ensure safety: human, road and vehicle and defect in any of them may lead to very serious accidents. One of SAIPA Group most important concerns is to increase quality and safety of the products in accordance with global standards in order to play its role in safe mobility.

To enhance the quality, safety and strength of SAIPA family products such as SAIPA 111, 132, 141, and SAIPA 131, in accordance with international standards, a project with the code name X100 in 2009 got onto agenda.

This project focuses on upgrading the standard of the vehicle in front and side crashes and further strengthening body and raising the standard of automotive lighting and beautiful interior decorating and comfort on board. To implement the project, a new design approach started with lots of changes in the dimensions, form and material, and new components were added to strengthen the structure and 65 new component were designed such as front floor, foot tray, steel dash strengthening parts, sides strengthening parts (pillars, floor rail, ceiling rail), chassis strengthening parts, middle pillar strengthening parts, the doors lining strengthening parts.

One of the most important features of the X-100 project is its ability to increase absorption of impacts in collisions; the assessments done according to European Standards indicated the least damage to passengers. With more than 50 newly designed components in interior trim and simultaneous changes in appearance such as renovating dashboard, door trim, console and seats and strengthening them by steel parts, and by implementing these modifications the safety of the cars is enhanced.

Ergonomic modification to seats and applying better insulation to absorb sound and at the same time improvement in performance of air conditioning system provides more comfort and convenience for passengers in trip.

In this project new adjustable headlights were designed that can change the level of lighting with a switch on the dash.

ABS brakes installed on all models and strengthening measures such as improved front and rear springs, along with other important features like installing airbags are among safety initiatives of this project.
